What’s Coming Up at ABC

March is here, and spring break is already upon us.  Starting this weekend, students will be out of school for a week, and some families will hit the road to enjoy this time off together.  If you are staying in town this weekend, be sure to “spring forward” for daylight savings.  Move your clocks forward an hour on Saturday night, drink some extra coffee on Sunday morning, and come ready to join us for a wonderful morning of worship and community.

I want to give you a heads up on what to expect in the upcoming weeks at ABC.  This Sunday, March 10th, we will press on to chapters 17-18 in our study of Revelation.  However, I will then take a brief hiatus from our study for three consecutive weekends.  On Sunday March 17th, I have invited Dr. Jeff Iorg, President of Gateway Seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention, to preach in both our services.  I’m excited to introduce you to Dr. Iorg, and I know you will be blessed by his message that day.  Dr. Iorg has served the SBC for many decades as a church planting pastor, a state convention executive, and as the president at Gateway Seminary for the past 20 years.

Some of you may have heard in the news that Dr. Iorg was also recently nominated to serve as the next President and CEO of the SBC Executive Committee.  The Executive Committee will conduct a vote on March 21st to officially make him the highest-ranking executive in the SBC.  I am thrilled by this news because I believe Dr. Iorg is the kind of leader our convention needs in that particular office.  I have been privileged to be mentored by him these past two years in my doctoral program, and I have found Dr. Iorg to be an extraordinary leader who walks in humility, demonstrates integrity, and has a proven track record of excellence in ministry.  Please join me in prayer for Dr. Iorg as he prepares for this next important ministry assignment.

Sunday March 24th will then be Palm Sunday, then of course March 31st will be Easter.  After we have walked through Holy Week together, I will return to the book of Revelation on Sunday April 7th.  We will set our eyes on the return of our risen Lord and Savior and the establishment of His kingdom on this earth.  I hope you have enjoyed our time in this book, and I’m confident that God will bless each of us as we set our eyes on the return of our King.

As a word of reminder, the Annie Armstrong missions offering is now open, and we have set a goal to raise $20,000 as a church.  If God is leading you to give above your regular tithes to help us achieve this goal, you can designate your gift and our finance office will direct it to this special cause.  I look forward to opening the book with you this Sunday.  Invite a friend and I’ll see you at 8:45am or 11:15am.

Last Sunday’s Sermon – Revelation 14-16

The Next Generation

Psalm 78:5-7, “He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments.”

Our vision at ABC is to see God light up your life, your home, your neighborhood, and the world.  This is why we invest so much into reaching the next generation for Jesus Christ.  Every week, incredible staff, volunteers, and resources are devoted to the ABC Kids and ABC Student Ministries.  Jesus Christ invested into the lives of children (Matthew 19:14), and so should we as His church.  I’m thankful for our student ministry’s recent Connection Weekend, and I’m grateful for the ongoing next generation ministries that happen every single week.

You will never make a better investment as a church than investing into the next generation.  Thank you for being a generous kingdom-minded church.  Your faithfulness in giving to the general fund budget continues to make ministry possible.  I’m thankful for the students who grew closer to God at Connection Weekend, and I’m especially grateful for the three students who gave their lives to Jesus Christ for the first time.

How can you help our church continue to impact the next generation?  Of course, you can help through your continued stewardship in giving.  But you can also help by inviting other families to join us.  The reality is 70%+ of families in Austin are not in church on any given Sunday.  You and I can invite others to come and experience the hope of Jesus Christ through the ministries of ABC.  What family could you invite to church this Sunday?  Your simple invitation could lead to life change for an entire family.

But lastly, I encourage you to consider joining us on mission here at ABC.  Serving in the ABC Kids and ABC Student Ministries is truly where the fun is found!  As our church continues to grow, so does our need for more qualified workers in the children and youth areas.  If you are interested in learning more, reach out to our staff and they would be happy to give you more details.

On a side note, be sure to follow along our sermon series on the Citizen ATX podcast channel.  Each week, Dr. Matt Gillum and I provide additional commentary on the previous Sunday’s sermon text.  Need help finding it?  Click this link and you can stream the episodes on your browser or find them on your preferred podcast application: https://citizenatx.buzzsprout.com/

Invite a friend to join you, and I look forward to seeing you this Sunday as we continue in our journey through the book of Revelation.

Easter is Here!

It is hard to believe, but we are only a few short weeks away from Easter Sunday!  Easter sneaks up on us this year as the big day falls early on Sunday March 31st.  The weekend of worship will begin at 6pm on Friday March 29th at our annual Good Friday service.  Dr. Stearns and our music ministry will lead us in a meaningful time of worship as we reflect on the message of Calvary.  We will set our attention on the cross through music and message, and we will observe the Lord’s Supper together.

Easter Sunday will feature three identical worship services at 8am, 9:30am, and 11:00am (no BFG’s that day).  These services will feature dynamic worship and a hope-filled message as we celebrate our Savior’s triumphant resurrection.  We will also offer an Easter egg hunt for the kids immediately following the 11am service.

As we prepare for Easter, I encourage you to do three things.  First, help us make room for others in our community.  We experienced record crowds on Easter last year.  Our two services were both packed full, so we are going to add a third service this year to make room for growth.  I encourage some of our early risers to join us for the 8am service.  You will be blessed by this identical service, but you will also be a blessing to others in our community.  Coming early will open up your seat for a guest at the 9:30am and 11am services.

Secondly, consider serving an hour on Easter Sunday.  We will need help in the nursery and preschool areas, parking lots, greeters, egg hunt logistics, and we need more singers in the choir.  Where can you serve on Easter Sunday?  Take the challenge to worship for an hour, but also serve for an hour.

Third, invite others to join us.  There is no better day to invite someone to church than on Easter Sunday.  Even if people do not normally go to church, many of them would gladly consider coming on Easter.  You have an opportunity to make a Gospel impact on a neighbor or friend simply by inviting them to come and celebrate with us that day.

Please also let us know if you or a family member are interested in being baptized on Easter.  Easter Sunday is the perfect opportunity to celebrate believer’s baptism.  Families are already usually together for this special day, and your baptism will serve as a living testimony to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  I look forward to pressing on in the book of Revelation with you this Sunday.  I will see you at 8:45am or 11:15am.

Sunday’s Sermon: Tribulation Witnesses – Revelation 10-11

God’s Love in Revelation

1 John 4:9, “In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.”  Valentine’s Day is this week, and the entire world will be focused on this topic of love.  We will express our love by purchasing cards, chocolates, flowers, and going out for special dinners.  While these things are wonderful, let us also take time to remind ourselves that God is love (1 John 4:16), and He has perfectly demonstrated His love by sending His Son into this world.

As we journey through the book of Revelation, I hope you don’t miss the magnitude of God’s love in this book.  I’m confident that you will recognize the weight of His wrath as we study the heaviness of the seals, trumpets, and bowls of Revelation.  But I also want you to recognize the weight of His love.  Because of His love for you, Jesus Christ drank the full cup of God’s wrath so we could live through Him.  (Matthew 26:42). “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins (1 John 4:10).

The book of Revelation not only teaches us of the things to come, but the book also serves as a reminder of what we have been saved from.  God has spared us from His wrath because Jesus Christ has already received it for us.  So what is our response?  Love God.  Love people.  John writes, “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another (1 John 4:11).  May we continue to be a church known for its love.  Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself this week.  “There is no commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:31).

Ask for God to give you an opportunity to love someone in need this week.  Valentine’s Day can be difficult for many.  Some feel lonely, some are grieving, and some are just looking for hope.  May each of us be mindful of others and love them as Christ has loved us.  I look forward to seeing you in worship as we continue to see that our hope is on the throne.

Culture of Generosity

This past week you should have received your end of year contribution report from ABC’s Finance Office.  We recently upgraded our church database system, and our new software now allows us to send those documents via email.  If you did not receive your email, or if you need a hard copy, please email Jennifer Koret and our team would be happy to assist you.

As I look back to 2023, I am blown away by God’s provision to our church.  In total, ABC received over $6.5 million in total contributions.  That total includes our general fund contributions, but it also includes nearly $1.3 million in designated gifts for debt retirement.  I am happy to announce that those designated gifts have now accelerated our debt payoff schedule.

We now carry about $5.5 million in total debt as a church.  This is a remarkable number considering that our church has paid over $25 million in principal and interest since 2010.  That $5.5 million in remaining debt is carried across two notes, one of which (a floating rate note) is now down to about $240k on the balance.  By God’s grace, we plan to pay off that note by this summer, which will leave our church with about $5 million remaining in debt on one note.

I write this report to celebrate this remarkable progress and to publicly give glory to God!  But I also give thanks to each of you for your faithful stewardship.  Your general fund contributions not only finance all the ministries of our church, but 18% of those general fund gifts help us pay down our debt.  I encourage you to continue to give your tithes to our general fund this year as those gifts fuel all the ministries and operations of our church.

However, I also encourage you to prayerfully consider giving an offering above your tithes towards the debt this year.  Eliminating this debt should matter to each of us because it will open up new doors to impactful ministry.  As stated earlier, 18% of our general budget currently goes toward debt payments.  Imagine the ministries and missions that our church could begin to fund if that money was freed up each year!  Eliminating this debt will help our church become even more impactful in our mission “to lead people into a life-changing relationship with the Light of the World, Jesus Christ.”

May each of us continue to do our part to cultivate a culture of generosity here at ABC. “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen” (Ephesians 3:20-21).

Last Sunday’s Sermon – Revelation 6-7

There is Joy in the House of the Lord

Psalm 122:1 says, “I was glad when they said to me, ’Let us go to the house of the Lord’!”  There is supposed to be joy in the house of the Lord.  Going to church is not something we have to do, it is something we get to do.  There is joy in worshiping God with other believers.  There is joy in hearing the truth of God’s Word.  And there is joy in building meaningful relationships with other believers.  I truly hope ABC is place that you are glad to go to each Sunday.

When it comes to children’s and youth ministries, we want to create a culture where God’s Word is taught, all while having fun together.  Some may find it hard to believe, but there is nothing wrong with having fun at church!  That is why we are offering our 2nd annual Family Fun Fest this Friday evening.  Families will come together to share a meal and then have an evening filled with games and friendly competition.  If you haven’t already done so, you can still register online at http://www.austinbaptistchurch.com.

I encourage you this week to share your gladness with others.  Look for new people this Sunday at church.  We have had dozens of visitors come through our doors every Sunday in January.  Let’s share our joy by receiving those who are new with gladness.  I also encourage you to shift your eyes outward from ABC this week.  I believe others would be glad to come to the house of the Lord if they were simply invited by someone inside it.  I challenge you to invite a friend to worship with you this weekend.  The invitation is simple: “I love my church, and I think you would too.”

I look forward to seeing you in worship and pressing forward in our study of the book of Revelation.  Read ahead to chapters 6 and 7 this week to get ready for Sunday’s message.  Additionally, make sure you subscribe to the Citizen ATX podcast to get bonus content for the sermon series (https://citizenatx.buzzsprout.com/).  New episodes are released by each Wednesday.  Each episode is focused on unpacking the previous Sunday’s sermon, and it will offer additional commentary and insight on the text.  I look forward to seeing you this Sunday at 8:45 or 11:15am.

Invest in your Marriage

Our vision at ABC is to see God light up your life, your home, your neighborhood, and the world.  In pursuit of that vision, ABC works hard to equip every member to shine for Jesus Christ in their home life.  We do this through community, counseling, prayer and support, and Biblical teaching.  Whether you are single or married, we believe Jesus wants to be the foundation of your home.

Some of the most challenging years in a home can be found in those child-rearing years.  Simply put, raising children is not for the faint of heart!  Raising children brings joy and excitement, but it can also bring exhaustion, heartache, and frustration.  Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for those parenting challenges to negatively impact a marriage.  That is why we are going to offer our first ever “Valentine’s Couple’s Retreat” on February 16th to 18th in Schulenberg, Texas.

The theme for this retreat will be, “protecting your marriage through the parenting years.”  All married couples with kids in the home are invited to join us for a weekend of refreshment and encouragement.  Our own Dr. Jimmy Myers, founder of The Timothy Center, will be leading the sessions for this retreat.  He will offer practical, Biblical wisdom that will equip you to thrive in your marriage during those parenting years.

If you have kids in the home, Bethany and I would like to invite you to join us at the retreat.  Spots are limited, so I encourage you to sign up ASAP.  I can’t think of a better way to spend Valentine’s weekend than to invest in your marriage at the beautiful Jordan Ranch (https://www.jordanranch.org/).  For more info and to register, please click the link here: https://austinbaptistchurch.com/event/valentines-couples-retreat?d=2024-02-16

I look forward to pressing on in our study of Revelation this Sunday.  I encourage you to read ahead in chapters four and five, and take some time to invite a neighbor or friend this week.  Have a wonderful week, and I will see you at 8:45am or 11:15am on this Lord’s Supper Sunday.

Follow the Footsteps of Paul

I hope you are staying warm this week, and I am looking forward to seeing you next weekend as we press on to the seven churches of Revelation.  As we look ahead to 2024, I want to extend an invitation for you to join me on a special trip this upcoming summer.  I am planning to lead a group to Greece for a Biblical discipleship trip to follow the footsteps of the apostle Paul.  The Bible will come alive as we journey through Philippi, Thessaloniki, Berea, Athens, Corinth, and Crete.

We will even have the opportunity to visit Patmos, the island where the apostle John was exiled and wrote the book of Revelation.  We will also see Ephesus, home of one of the seven churches of Revelation that will be studying this weekend.  This trip will take place July 7th to 16th and more information can be found here: https://signature.rezdy.com/606214/pastor-jonathan-spencer-10-day-journeys-of-paul-in-greece-july-7-16-2024

As many of you know, we had a large group lined up to go to Israel just a few weeks after the October 7th attack.  Unfortunately, the war has caused us to postpone that trip indefinitely, but I hope this trip will offer an alternative for those who looking to experience a Biblical tour of a lifetime.  Please review the itinerary on the link above, and let me know if you have any questions.

I’m looking forward to seeing you back in worship this weekend.  I encourage you to invite a friend to join us on this journey through the book of Revelation.  If you have not done so already, take the time to subscribe to our Citizen ATX podcast channel (https://citizenatx.buzzsprout.com/).  We will provide bonus content every week on the previous Sunday’s sermon.  I look forward to worshipping with you this Sunday at 8:45am or 11:15am.

Last Sunday’s Sermon: Revelation 1

New Series: The Book of Revelation

Happy new year!  I hope you had a blessed Christmas, and I pray that you have hit the ground running for Jesus Christ in 2024.  As I look back at 2023, I want to thank you for your generosity.  Year end giving reports have come in, and I am grateful to announce that we have met our budgeted goal for 2023.  Thank you to every person who faithfully worshipped through giving.  Your partnership means so much to me personally, and I thank you for equipping our church to do the ministry that God has called us to do.  I encourage you to press on in your faithful stewardship this month, as we continue to shine our light in Austin and all around the world.

I look forward to returning to the pulpit this coming weekend.  Thank you for your prayers and support while I have been gone to Gateway Seminary in California.  I will soon wrap up my second year in the doctoral program, and I am thankful for this opportunity to grow as a minister and follower of Jesus Christ.  The professors and doctoral candidates have been a great blessing to me, I am excited to press on to my third and final year.

But I am mostly excited to be back home and to kick off our new sermon series on the book of Revelation.  I am titling this series, “Our Hope is on the Throne.”  Many of us have lots of questions and fears going into this new year.  Who will win the 2024 elections?  How will the economy perform?  What is going to happen in the middle east?  Our world is filled with questions, but the good news is our steadfast hope is seated on the throne.

Jesus Christ is our living hope, and the book of Revelation reminds us that our King will soon step off His throne and return to this earth.  I believe many wrongly approach this book with a spirit fear, but I encourage every believer to view this book as a source of encouragement.  As a follower of Jesus Christ, this book offers you incredible hope.  This series will answer some big questions you may have about His return, but most of all, I pray that this series will inspire you to live faithfully for His return.

I encourage you to make your best effort to attend each Sunday.  I will unpack the big picture of our text each week, and I am also planning to give extended commentary with Dr. Matt Gillum each week on our podcast channel, “Citizen ATX” (https://citizenatx.buzzsprout.com/).  Begin to pray over this series and begin inviting your friends.  January is the perfect time to invite people to church, and the book of Revelation will offer an intriguing invitation for many.  Send a personal invitation, and I look forward to worshipping with you on Sunday at 8:45 or 11:15am.  May we all pray together as one this week: “Amen.  Come Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20).

The Light Has Come

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).  This Sunday, we are going to celebrate that the Light has come.  Christmas Eve candlelight services provide the wonderful opportunity to bring the entire family together to sing familiar Christmas carols, hear a comforting message, and experience the wonder of light.

I encourage you to join us for one of our two identical services at 10am or 3pm.  Don’t miss the opportunity to share your light this week by inviting a family member or friend to join you.  As we near the end of 2023, I am grateful for the many ways that God has shined through our church family this year.  May each of us approach Christmas day with hearts filled with gratitude and generosity.  Praise be to God for the great things He has done.

I look forward to worshipping with you, and I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas.

Jonathan Spencer
