1 Samuel 17:45, “Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts.” This Sunday we will return to our study of David through our new sermon series, “After God’s Heart.” We will examine one of the most well-known stories in all of scripture: the battle of David and Goliath.
Culture often views this story through a man-centered lens. The focus is usually placed on David, and he is celebrated for his triumphant victory as the unexpected underdog. However, this story is much more about God than it is about David. David only stood courageously because he understood he did not stand alone. God helped David defeat Goliath, and God can help us defeat the Goliaths in our lives as well. We all face giants in our lives. Some face anxiety, anger, addictions, and temptations to sin. But we do not have to go into these battles alone.
I look forward to unpacking this story with you on Sunday. Additionally, we will have a special guest with us in worship. Will Browning serves as the Send California Director for the North American Mission Board. He is a successful church planter who now serves as the leader for SBC church planting in the state of California. I was privileged to spend some time with him a couple weeks ago, and I’ve invited him to share a few words about the great work we are beginning in Los Angeles through Light the Way. He will be with us in both worship services, so help me give him a warm ABC welcome.
Invite a friend, and I look forward to seeing you at 8:45am or 11:15am this Sunday.
Onward and upward,
Jonathan Spencer
